Ellen Winter

Ellen Winter (she/they) is a Brooklyn-based composer, performer and teaching artist whose style is steeped in the rhythm of practice and play. For 10 years, she's worked one on one, in the classroom and in public spaces with students of all ages demystifying music one workshop at a time. Ellen teaches from a place of curiosity and care, moving at the pace of the individual or class and fostering enthusiasm where it leads. She also works with The New Victory Theatre and Greenwich House Music School, and her private studio covers voice, piano, production, theory, and musical theatre.

As a creative, Ellen is a hybrid collaborator with a specialty in theatricalizing music and musicalizing theatre. In 2017, she co-wrote/composed/directed the world's first podcast musical, 36 Questions, with long time collaborator Chris Littler, starring Jessie Shelton and Jonathan Groff. She co-arranged, music directed, and originated the role of Choir Leader in MCC's Cold War Choir Practice (2026, dir. Knud Adams). Currently, Ellen is commissioned by Ars Nova, EST/Sloan, and The Alley Theatre & Concord Theatricals.

Ellen's released two full lengths albums under her own name, as well as three albums with Littler on their project, Chamber Band. Her cover of "Paper Roses" was featured on Emmy-nominated Tiny Beautiful Things. In late 2025, she released "so disgusting!" in collaboration with colorful, visionary animator Francesca Moore. She's worked with Dave Malloy, Heather Christian, Ingrid Michaelson, Sarah Bareilles, Mark Sonnenblick, and The Bengsons.
